Unveiling The Urgency:Why Ireland Needs an Immigration Referendum

Over the last number of months the issue of immigration has become a very contentious issue in Ireland. In modern terms immigration into Ireland is a relatively new phenomenon which dates back to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of communism in Eastern Europe and the short lived Celtic tiger and its cub, post 2008.

So the question must be asked why has it become such a hotly debated subject that animates people so much? In order to answer this question we need to look at the nature of current immigration trends, its social backdrop and the motivation of decision makers who advocate it.

Immigration can be defined as “the action of moving permanently to a foreign country.

As stated previously this has been happening in Ireland for about 20 years, so why is it suddenly different? The primary model that is held up as justification for immigration is the famous American “melting pot,” a nineteenth century phenomenon that saw millions of immigrants moving to the USA where they successfully integrated and adopted a new collective identity that produced the most advanced and successful nation in history. After the second world war many European nations adopted this approach when they were faced with post war reconstruction. France, Germany, and Britain all used mass immigration to solve manpower and productivity problems, all of them failed.

The essential reason for this failure to replicate the USA melting pot was cultural. Whereas in the USA the majority of immigrants were drawn from Europe which facilitated integration and assimilation into a burgeoning American culture, the European countries imported peoples from diverse, religious and alien cultures that resisted integration and maintained allegiance to their countries of origin. Thus, when we seek to understand the mechanics of successful immigration culture, and economic resources, not race, are the determining factors.

There are three essential requirements for successful immigration these are proportionality, benefit and integration. It is not sufficient to have one or even two presents for a successful outcome, all must be present for immigration to succeed. The nation must be able to absorb the number of immigrants entering its country, it must benefit from their presence and they must integrate into the host society. Here we begin to understand how current immigration into Ireland is failing. This government has ignored or does not understand these principles, we believe that both possibilities are true. Let us start with some facts.

Ireland has an opt out under the Lisbon Treaty 2007 which means that we are not subject to EU laws regarding refugees, immigrants, or asylum seekers. Under the Dublin Accords 2015 any refugees entering the EU must seek asylum in the first country they land in. Ireland has no direct flights with most of the nationalities currently seeking “asylum.” It is believed, many refugees are in fact illegal, economic migrants, have destroyed their documents and have broken Irish law. Our current government has lied consistently about these facts and pursues this agenda regardless of public opinion. The current administration in Ireland refuses to answer questions regarding its immigration “policy” it knows that it cannot stand up to scrutiny and that it is a disaster.

Immigration without integration is a recipe for disaster.

There can only be one dominant culture in any national space. When people have an allegiance to a foreign culture in that space this a situation that will lead to conflict. We know this to be true, especially in Ireland, where we have experienced war in the six counties exactly because of differing cultures. Are we now going to replicate these sources of conflict the 26 counties?

The Centre Party understands these issues at a fundamental level. We are aware of not just of our history but also of wider European history and we will not make the same mistakes. If you want a Party that is committed to Irish culture and a safe prosperous nation then you need to support us. The Centre Party will maintain and uphold the three essential principles of immigration and protect Irish society and Irish culture.
