Domestic Food & Energy Security

  • Ireland produces enough food to feed 45m people.

  • Russia’s war in Ukraine and the resulting constraints in animal feed and fertiliser imports highlighted vulnerabilities in Ireland’s food security.

  • Ireland’s Agriculture Sector is an extraordinary national asset that should be helped to develop further rather than denigrated.

  • Irish families and businesses have been left exposed to energy inflation, in part, by a number of decisions taken by successive Irish Governments.

What We Will Do

  • Maintain current reliefs and supports aimed at alleviating input costs and keeping food costs as low as possible.

  • Oppose legally binding reductions in herd size. The world will not be made better by Ireland reducing food output.

  • Develop supports for greener farming inclusive of solar power, anaerobic digestion, and reduced methane emissions.

  • Re-open peat-burning power stations and authorise the use of LNG terminals where feasible to support families and businesses through the current energy crisis.

  • Reverse the decision to ban new licenses for oil and gas exploration.

  • Conduct a benefit analysis to determine the viability of nuclear power as part of our national energy security.

  • Fast-track the development of offshore wind energy.
